Contract Distilling: Your Questions Answered

Curious about how our bespoke distilling process works? This section answers common questions about creating your own spirit, working with us, and bringing your brand to life.

Getting Started

Where are you based?

We’re nestled in the old market town of Towcester, South Northamptonshire. It’s where tradition meets creativity – and where every bottle begins its journey.

What type of spirits can you produce?

We craft a wide range of spirits, including gin, vodka, rum, single malts, apple brandy, and liqueurs – all made by hand with care and character. We can also distil from base ingredients like wine, cider, beer, or your own traditional wash – whether that’s for an Indian rak, grappa, or something entirely unique to your heritage or imagination. If it ferments, we can likely distil it – and we’re always up for exploring new flavours and formats.

Do I need to know anything about distilling to start a spirit brand?

Not at all. Whether you’re full of ideas or just curious where to begin, we’ll guide you through every step. You bring the vision – we’ll help turn it into a spirit worth sharing.

Can you help me create my own gin/rum/vodka from scratch?

Yes, we’d be delighted to. Whether you’re dreaming up a gin, rum, vodka or a unique liqueur, we can help craft it from the ground up. Our flavour and recipe development is tailored to your vision – and surprisingly affordable. Yes—we produce custom spirits for weddings, corporate gifts, shops, and hospitality venues.

Can I supply my own ingredients or botanicals?

Yes, we love working with personal or locally sourced ingredients. If you’ve got a story to tell through flavour, we’re here to help you distil it – literally.

Spirit Development & Collaboration

How long does it take to develop a custom spirit?are you based?

You could have a product to market within 4 to 12 weeks, depending on complexity and packaging. The most time-consuming part of the process is usually branding and label development – but once that’s in place, things move quickly.

What’s the minimum batch size for contract distilling?

Typically 35 – 90 litres, but we can be flexible depending on your goals, the spirit type and production method. For hospitality and weddings taking our house spirits it is usually much less.

Do you collaborate with local producers or venues?

Yes – we’re proud of our regional roots and love collaborating with local businesses to create something truly special. If you’re exploring a partnership or have a project in mind, we’d love to hear from you. Just get in touch here and let’s start the conversation.

Can I visit the distillery?

We’d love that. Visits are welcome by appointment, and we positively encourage you to come and see us beforehand to discuss your project in person. If your project involves any product development, this is always interactive and hands-on – so a trip to the distillery is essential. You can book a call or visit here.

Branding & Packaging

Do you offer private label spirits for events or retail?

Yes – we produce custom spirits for weddings, corporate gifts, shops, and hospitality venues.

Can I use my own branding or logo?

Absolutely. For small-batch services, we’ll weave your brand assets into every detail to ensure everything feels beautifully aligned. For larger projects, we’ll work closely with you and your partners to craft a final product that’s just right—refined, resonant, and unmistakably yours.

Can you help with bottle design and labelling?

We offer a range of stock bottles to choose from here, and we’re happy to guide you through compliant labelling, visual design, and brand storytelling. If you’re looking for something more bespoke, we’re happy to connect you with our trusted network of creatives, bottle suppliers, and printers.

We do. From cork to carton, we can manage the full packaging process.

Do you handle bottling and packaging?

We do. From cork to carton, we can take care of the entire packaging process. If you prefer to handle part of it yourself, we also offer bulk liquid options for flexible fulfilment.

Compliance & Fulfilment

Do you handle legal compliance and duty regulations?

Our team offers clear, friendly guidance to help ensure your spirit meets all HMRC and labelling requirements. Whether you need full support or just a nudge in the right direction, we’ll tailor our help to suit your approvals and licensing needs.

Can you ship spirits directly to my customers or venue?

We don’t offer direct-to-consumer fulfilment, as most clients either manage this themselves or work with trusted partners – whom we’re happy to recommend. If you have an urgent need to supply multiple venues or business locations, we can usually coordinate shipments across those destinations to suit your needs.

Can you help with exporting spirits internationally?

If you’re looking to export your goods, we’re here to help. We have experience navigating the export process and can work closely with you to ensure everything runs smoothly – from documentation and compliance to getting your product where it needs to go. Whether it’s a one-off shipment or part of a broader export strategy, we’ll support you every step of the way.

Our Services in More Detail

From house spirits branded with your own labels, to customised botanicals and completely bespoke spirits we have a service to meet your needs. Here’s a more detailed view of what we offer.

House / Off the Shelf

Our standard, entry level service takes one of our house spirits (gin, rum or vodka) to create your own branded product, or range of products. Alternatively you can choose one of our our off the shelf flavoured gin/rum/vodka products for your own brand.

This is a very cost effective option if you are running your own cocktail bar, or have your own pub, restaurant, hotel, wedding venue or stately home. Minimum quantity for private label is just 48 x 70cl bottles (or equivalent). Typically, these will be supplied duty paid in one of our stock 50cl or 70cl bottles (see here), or you are welcome to supply your own bottle. Price is charged per bottle, so is very easily scaled to suit your requirements.

Just choose your spirit, ABV and bottle, supply us with your label and we’ll do the rest… it’s as easy as that.

Customised

Our customised service allows you to take one of our house spirits (gin, rum or vodka) and then customise it with additional liquid botanicals and/or natural flavours to create your own signature spirit, liqueur, or range of products.

A short development session is required to make each customised product. This is interactive and typically takes place at the distillery at a time to suit and lasts around 1 hour. This session provides a great opportunity to meet the distillers, see the distillery and to discuss your project in more detail.

Minimum quantity is 48 x 70cl bottles (or equivalent). Typically, these will be supplied, duty paid, in one of our stock 50cl or 70cl bottles (see here), or you are welcome to supply your own bottle. Price is charged per bottle, so is very easily scaled to suit your requirements.

Just choose your spirit, ABV and bottle, supply us with your label and we’ll do the rest… it’s as easy as that.

Bespoke

Our fully bespoke service allows you to create your own unique spirit from scratch on our copper pot stills. Whether you are looking to create a gin, vodka, brandy or grain/beer spirit then we can help you get your product to market. For this service, apart from gin, you will need to supply your own base alcohol (wort, beer, cider, wine, etc.).

Typically this service requires a development session which we call the Proof of Concept (POC) stage. The POC can be carried out remotely however, it presents a great opportunity for you to visit the distillery, meet the distillers, learn the process of making your spirit, and to discuss your project in more detail. The POC takes place on our development stills and you will leave with a quantity of your product for testing before committing to a production run.

Once produced, your bespoke spirit will be supplied, duty paid, in one of our stock 50cl or 70cl bottles (see here), or you are welcome to supply your own bottle. Minimum run will depend on your base alcohol (wort, cider, wine, etc.) but will start from approximately 130-140 x 70cl bottles (equivalent). Price is charged per bottle, so is very easily scaled to suit your requirements.

Once your spirit is made, you will just need to choose your preferred ABV and bottle, supply us with your label and we’ll do the rest… it’s as easy as that.

Whisky

To legally create a Whisky, New Make spirit must be stored in wooden casks/barrels for a minimum of 3 years.

As such, we do not generally offer Whisky production, nor do we have Whisky available as an off the shelf product. However, we can distil your New Make spirit to your own specification for maturation off site, and we can obtain Irish or Scotch Whisky from our suppliers* to make your Whisky-based spirit drink. Contact us here if you’d like to discuss the options further.

* Minimum order quantities for Irish or Scotch Whisky are usually 1000L at around 64%.

The Process

We aim to make the process as simple as possible and, depending on your chosen service, there may be opportunities to get involved along the way.

The first thing we recommend is that you get started on your branding as invariably the label is the last thing we are waiting for. Next you just need to decide on which service you want to use. The house products are always the quickest to deliver whilst the customised and bespoke take a little longer as there is some product development required along the way. For all options you should think about what ABV (the strength of alcohol) your product will be. There are legal requirements for some products but in general a good quality craft spirit would be around 40-43%. Choose your strength carefully as the stronger the liquor the more UK alcohol duty* will need to be paid.

If choosing customised or bespoke routes, then think carefully about the flavour profile you want to achieve. We will give guidance if we think a particular flavour, or flavour combination won’t work, but we prefer not to recommend flavours as their are literally thousands of options out there so we wouldn’t want to narrow your creativity. Also, you may come up with something that we would never have thought of which works wonderfully well.

The development stages for customised and bespoke are interactive as we need your input. For bespoke products you have the option of helping to distil your first test batch from start to finish.

If you come to us with the above points covered then your new product could be ready for market in as little as 1-4 weeks! If you have any questions, or just want to talk through options in more detail then click on the button below to get in touch and arrange a discovery call with one of our distillers.

Note that UK Alcohol duty is currently £31.64 per litre of absolute alcohol. So a 70cl bottle at 40% is liable to £8.86 in duty. We take care of the duty for you and it is included in our bottle price. However, we can supply duty suspended if moving to another UK warehouse or if your spirit is being exported.

Bottles & Packaging

The look and feel of your product is massively important, as this is what draws in the consumer. The quality of the contents is what makes them come back for more. We are not experts in design, so we recommend you find a good brand creative to help you with your look and feel, We will help where we can, and have some contacts for designers and label printers if needed.

Choosing a bottle and closure can be daunting and, when starting out, purchasing small quantities of bottles can be very costly. Of course, all clients are welcome to supply their own bottles and closures, however, we have selected a few exceptional quality stock bottles from UK and German manufacturers with a choice of closures to get you started. Our stock bottles include options for stoppers and screw caps.

Once you have chosen your bottle you will need to decide how to make it tamper proof. We provide a couple of simple options in the form of pvc shrink capsules, but you may want to consider applying paper labels over the closure (watch-strap tampers), or maybe even a wax dipped finish. Your brand designer will no doubt be able to assist you in getting the best effect within your budget.

Finally, you just need to provide your labels to us on a roll that is compatible with our machinery. We can apply a single label, or a front and back label. Of course, for very small runs you may opt to get your labels printed on a sheet, in which case you would have to hand apply these yourself in the comfort of your own office or home.

Charities

If you are a registered charity, or other group looking to produce a gin or rum for fund-raising, then your own label spirit can be a great way to raise money. Each year we support many charitable groups raise thousands of pounds with no up-front costs.

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Contract Distilling Partner

  • Gauge how quickly and clearly they respond to your initial inquiry.
  • Do they offer transparent pricing, minimums, and timelines without chasing?
  • Are they willing to schedule a call, share samples, or walk you through their process?
Tip : A distiller who’s slow, vague, or evasive at the start will likely be the same when deadlines loom.
Ask for a written agreement that defines:
  • Who owns the recipe, mash bill or botanical blend
  • Whether they can reproduce or adapt it for others
  • What happens if you part ways
Tip : Your spirit’s soul should never be up for grabs. If they hesitate to formalize IP boundaries, walk away.
  • Can they handle your preferred base spirit, botanical load, ABV, and aging method?
  • Do they offer small-batch flexibility, seasonal runs, or iterative development?
  • Are they open to R&D trials or custom filtration, proofing, or barrel sourcing?
Tip : Ask for a tour and samples of previous collaborations. You want a partner who’s as curious and capable as you are.
  • Confirm they’re fully licensed for distilling, bottling, and bonded storage.
  • Ask about duty handling, HMRC reporting, APPA and AWRS
  • Request a sample production log or audit trail.
Tip : A good distiller is not just compliant — they’re proactive in protecting your brand’s integrity.
  • Do they understand your tone, audience, and story?
  • Will they respect your labeling language, sensory goals, and mythic flourishes?
  • Can they scale with you — from 500 bottles to 5,000 — without compromising quality?
Tip : Share a brand brief and see how they respond. You’re not just outsourcing production — you’re inviting them into your narrative
